Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Meditation

Saturday, October 19, 2 - 4 pm in San Telmo

In this workshop, Dr. Jennifer B. Rhodes introduces meditation as both a spiritual and scientific practice. She will trace the historical roots of the practice and lead students in exploring what 20th and 21st century scientists discovered: meditation and yoga practiced on a regular basis can change the mind-body connection. You really do have the power to change your life one breath at a time!

After the introduction, we will participate in a short, guided meditation that you can use in your own daily practice. Time will be alloted to discuss our experiences and for Jenn to answer any questions about starting a mediation practice.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Students will learn a brief history of meditation from a spiritual perspective.

2. They will explore what mindfulness is.

3. Students will begin to understand the relaxation response and how meditation can trigger such a state

4. They will learn a simple practice that combines basic movement and meditation which they can combine with a daily yoga practice.

Dr. Jennifer B. Rhodes is a licensed psychologist and 200 hour ISHTA trained yogi. Dr. Rhodes has been teaching mindfulness based practices for over 10 years and recently received extra meditation training from Peter Ferko and Sarah Finger at ISHTA Yoga in New York City.
